Conseslus Kipruto claimed the 3000m steeplechase Diamond League title in Zurich on Thursday night.

The Kenyan won the race in the unremarkable time of 8:10.15. What was remarkable about the win: he did it with just one shoe.

On the second lap, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, kicked off his spike but continued on for over 2000m of jumps.

The race came down an epic final straight between the 23-year-old and Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali with Kipruto edging it in a photo finish.

"I have big pain," Kipruto said afterward.

I am injured because I lost my left shoe. That was a mess.

But it motivated me to fight as hard as I could, so the race went well.
