"I'm Just So Glad I Pulled It Out On The Day...Unbelievable"

A beaming Thomas Barr spoke to RTE Sport minutes after securing a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the European Championships in Berlin.

Having just run his second fastest time ever to get himself on the podium, the Waterford man was visibly delighted with his performance. Talking through the replay of the final stages, Barr described his thoughts during the thrilling moments as he approached the final three hurdles with the Norwegian Karsten Warholm pulling away in front.

I could see him (Warholm) coming into my peripherals, and I could see Copello, and I could see the Frenchman inside me but I knew I could pick him off.

As he watched himself crossing the line the joy was clear to see as he described the moment he realized the medal had been secured.

I wasn't sure if I'd gotten third but a quick look across settled that debate for me.

Barr's composure in analysis so soon after catching his breath was almost as impressive as the race itself, as he even joked that he was double-jobbing as a commentator.

Draped in a tricolour, he thanked the "absolutely amazing" Irish support in the stadium that had helped him feel relaxed in the build-up.

That' when I run my best...when I'm relaxed....happy to be here.

A superb result for Barr in what is becoming a fantastic summer for Irish sport.
