Sydney McLaughlin set a new world record for the 400m hurdles at the US Olympic trials on Sunday night.

The 21-year-old ran an incredible 51.90, becoming the first woman ever to run under 52 seconds for the event.

McLaughlin broke the previous record of 52.16 which was held by Dalilah Muhammad.

It was Muhammad - the 2016 Olympic champion and 2019 world champion - who finished second behind McLaughlin. The previous two championship meetings of the pair, at the 2019 US Nationals and the 2019 World Championships in Doha, had also resulted in world records.

The 31-year-old Muhammad - who ran 52.42 (the joint sixth fastest time ever) - led coming off the final bend but McLaughlin overhauled her lead as she jumped the penultimate hurdle. Anna Cockrell finished third in 53.70.

"It's one of those moments you dream about, and think about, and replay in your head, [wondering] when you're going to be able to put it together," said McLaughlin.

"I knew from the moment I woke up today that it was just going to be a great day. It was just the final, 'I did it' moment. I'm going to cherish it for the rest of my life."
