After a stumbling performance in the semi-final, many were doubting whether Usain Bolt would be able to hold off the challenge of his ageing but controversial challenger, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin.

He was 2/1 with some bookmakers - see Owen Gibson's gleeful tweet after the race.

Testing positive in 2006, Gatlin returned to competition in 2010. His recent burst of good form has been greeted with a mixture of scepticism and dismay.

Steve Cram wasn't afraid to risk charges of bias in his commentary at the outset and he exploded with joy at the race's end.
