Young Bahrain Athlete Has Nightmare Moment In 3000m Steeplechase

You could say it's been a poor week for pacemakers in athletics.

Last week in the men's 1500m at the Diamond League meeting in Rome, Job Kinyor set off at a pace which made his presence in the race useless to those attempting to set a quick time at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

In Oslo last night, young Bahrain athlete Winfred Mutile Yavi had a nightmare beginning to the 3000m steeplechase. As the 17-year-old approached the water jump for the first time, she momentarily forgot that it was part of the race. It meant she had to readjust at the last moment, nearly causing chaos for the other runners in the field.

After she hauled herself over the obstacle, she did eventually make her way back to the lead but would not last long before dropping out.

The race was eventually won by Kenyan Norah Jeruto in an exciting sprint finish from Ethiopian Sofia Assefa
