At the weekend, Tadhg Kennelly oversaw the AFL Europe Draft Combine in DCU. Twenty Irish players took part including Darragh Joyce and Pat Spillane (son of the other one).

Meanwhile, back in Australia, Pearce Hanley's contract at the Brisbane Lions has been extended by a further two years, meaning he will remain in Queensland until 2019.

The Brisbane Lions were effusive in their praise of their captain in their press release.

Vice-Captain Hanley, who was already contracted until the end of 2017, has put pen to paper for an additional two years on top of that, his freakish skills and devastating running game set to light up the Gabba.

Hanley broke into the Lions team in 2008 and won the club members player of the year for the 2013 season. The team have struggled in recent seasons. Last year, they finished 17th and second bottom in the ladder. They have not reached the finals series since 2009 when they were defeated by the Western Bulldogs in the semi-finals.

Hanley will be 31 by the time his current contract ends. Mayo will be waiting a while to secure his services again.
