Katie Taylor will NOT be appearing on Andy Lee's undercard at Thomond Park on September 19th.
A press event had been scheduled for today to announce Taylor's involvement on the card next month, as Andy Lee defends his WBO World middleweight title against undefeated Brit Billy Joe Saunders.
Late yesterday evening that conference was postponed until tomorrow, Wednesday, but the rescheduled event has now been cancelled, as have plans to include the amateur legend on September's professional bill.
Lee told Balls he was keen to have his friend and a fellow Irish boxing icon on his card at the original press conference a fortnight ago, and his trainer Adam Booth expressed his regret that Taylor's involvement couldn't quite be finalised, commenting:
We believe we did everything we could to make this event happen but unfortunately on this occasion, the outcome was not to be.
Taylor's own Devlin Sports remarked on Katie's behalf,
It is with great regret that Katie Taylor will not be taking part on the Andy Lee Undercard at Thomond Park on September 19th. We would like to wish Andy all the best.
It's sad news for Irish boxing fans that we won't get to see a sporting icon hone her skills in front of 34,000 people, but with the main event set to be a scorcher and the likes of Cork knockout merchant Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan still rumoured for inclusion on the undercard, 'The Showdown At Thomond' still looks like it could become a legendary night of Irish sport.
