Jermall Charlo stopped Dennis Hogan in the seventh round of their WBC middleweight world title fight at the Barclays Center in New York on Saturday night.

The 34-year-old Hogan, a Kildare native who is now based in Australia, stepped up from 154lbs to 160lbs for the fight.

The undefeated Charlo caught Hogan with a vicious left hook early in the seventh round. Though Hogan rose to his feet, he wasn't stable and the referee waved the fight off. It is the first KO defeat of his career.

Charlo had sent Hogan head over heels in the fourth round when he caught the man from Kilcullen with an uppercut which had him tumbling towards the ropes.

"I wanted to keep going, but the decision was fair enough by the referee," Hogan said after the fight.

"I didn’t see the punch coming on the second knockdown. I was trying to keep boxing him, but then, all of a sudden, I was on the ground and the fight was over."
