Katie Taylor has retained her status as the undisputed lightweight champion of the world after securing a unanimous points decision victory over Miriam Gutierrez in London tonight.

Less than three months after her rematch victory over Delphine Persoon, the Bray woman was the hot favourite entering this one despite her opponent entering the fight undefeated.

It was easy to see why right from the first bell, with the Taylor dominating the Spaniard. She landed some huge shots at the very start, and it looked at one point inside the first minute like she was going to score a knockdown.

The second round round followed the same pattern, with Gutierrez struggling to land any punches of note. She did well to hang in the third round, with Taylor landing some huge shots to rock her opponent.

Katie would finally score a knockdown on right on the bell at the end of the fourth, with the writing very much on the wall at this stage.

It was remarkable that Gutierrez managed to survive in the fight, showing great heart to stay on her feet despite the relentless pressure from the Irishwoman.

The fight would eventually go the distance, but there could certainly be no arguing over the decision.

The judges scored it at 100-89, 100-90, 99-91, with two of them awarding all ten rounds to Taylor. She now moves to a professional record of 17-0.

Speaking after the fight, Taylor was typically complimentary to her opponent.

I thought it was a great performance. She was very tough, I was definitely trying my best to get her out of there at times, but she just kept firing back.

She's very durable, she's obviously bigger and stronger than I was. Unfortunately I just couldn't get her out, I would have loved a stoppage today. Overall it was a great performance...

We wouldn't have taken this fight if we didn't think we were going to be in great shape. It was a very busy year for me training wise, but I think I'm at my best when I'm fighting regularly.

I would fight every month if I could, if Eddie would let me!

A class act.

Taylor was simply irresistible tonight. We're already looking forward to the next title defence.
