The rumoured fight between unified middleweight world champion, Gennady Golovkin, and Ireland's Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan has tonight been dismissed as a non-runner; and it is reported to be down to O'Sullivan himself.

Tipped as a potential replacement for Canelo Alvarez, the proposed fight on May 5 is now looking seriously unlikely to happen at all.

ESPN's Dan Rafael reported that "Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN on Wednesday that O'Sullivan has declined an offer made to fill in as GGG's opponent".

In what would have unquestionably been the biggest fight of O'Sullivan's career to date, as recent as yesterday, O'Sullivan was seen to endorse an article on his Twitter account that the details of the fight were close to completion.
