What time is Joe Ward fighting?

You can watch Joe Ward fight tonight in the final of the 81 kg Light-Heavyweight division at the AIBA World Championships in Hamburg around 7:20 - 7:30 pm this evening.

Ward has already made history this tournament, becoming the first Irishman to ever reach two World Championship finals.

The Westmeath man will face a familiar opponent tonight. He will face a huge challenge in the shape of Olympic champion and three-time world champion Julio La Cruz.

Thankfully, since the World Championships are being held in Hamburg this year, there isn't as much of a demand on viewer's sleep schedule as is often the case with following boxing.

Their bout will be the eight of ten finals to take place tonight. The first final gets underway at 18:00 (17:00 Irish time).

With the added extravagance of medal presentations and so on, this means that it probably won't be til around 19:20-19:30 before the Moate native makes the walk to the ring.

There is a further option, if it is open to you, to watch the bout through the BBC red button feature.

It will take a monumental effort from Ward to bring home the gold medal given his opponent's record. La Cruz defeated the Irishman in both 2015 and 2013 in this competition.

The Cuban boasts an outstanding pedigree having won Olympic gold in the Light-Heavyweight category in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 to go along with his world titles in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Because of this, Ward will need to be at his absolute best to defeat La Cruz. He has already come through tough tests, however, as shown by his bruising encounter with Bektemir Melikuzieve in the semi-final.

Whatever the outcome, Ward has further entrenched himself as one of Ireland's brightest sporting stars.
