Ireland To Pay Significant Price For Impressive World Cup

Ireland's impressive showing, both in the World Cup and in recent associate competitions, has come with a significant price. Ireland's coach Phil Simmons is set to leave his post to take up the same role with his native West Indies. It was always likely that the Trinidadian would be courted by the Windies, but it comes as a blow none the less.

Simmons took up his role in 2007 and it had resulted in a period of significant success for Ireland. Two Intercontinental Cups, two World Cricket League's and three T20 World Cup qualifier tournament wins rank amongst his significant achievements. Perhaps more importantly he has turned Ireland into a side that many regard as worthy of test status. Indeed during his tenure the ICC finally set a concrete pathway for Ireland to achieve that status.

Phil Simmons - A True Irishman

He thoroughly took to Ireland during his time here, becoming an ardent Dubs fan, being seen in a blue jersey on many an occasion. He had no qualms about singing Ireland's call either - he was dedicated to Ireland in every sense.

He will inherit a Windies squad that pipped Ireland to qualification for the World Cup quarter-finals. Despite this, there has significant trouble within the West Indies camp for some time. They have been beset by internal strife, experience constant disagreements and are without a permanent coach for the guts of a year. He will have his work cut out to return the Windies to the powerhouse they were for large parts of their existence.

Balls.ie look forward to Simmons returning to Ireland with his West Indies team and wish Phil all the best with his new role.
