After five weeks out due to injuries sustained during the Scheldeprijs last month, Sam Bennett returned to action on Wednesday.

And a spectacular return it was too. After a tight sprint finish the 24-year-old from Carrick-On-Suir won the first stage of Bayern Rundfahrt. Bennett just ousted Nacer Bouhanni and John Degenkolb to claim victory.

Sam is the son of Michael Bennett, a former League of Ireland player and manager with Waterford United. He was born in Belgium where his father played professionally with Eendracht Wervik.

The Bora-Argon 18 rider posted to Instagram after the victory thanking his teammates.

Huge big thank you to my team who did a fantastic job today! Good day back after 5 weeks #comebackstronger
