37-year-old Basso had a crash on stage five of the race after which he felt pain in one of his testicles which persisted for a number of days.

This lead to him undergoing some tests. Just two hours before the press conference the Tinkoff-Saxo cyclist discovered that the pain was due to cancer.

Basso confirmed that he will undergo surgery as soon as possible in Italy.
