The double Olympic champion battled through the pain on Sunday to finish the stage and he now lies in third last place in the overall standings. Despite his injury, the Welshman is determined not to pull out of the Tour. "Yesterday was one of the worst days I've ever had on a bike,I've done so much to lose weight and get fit for this, I'm not going to give up straight away."

Thomas' efforts inspired his Team Sky colleagues. "That made us all smile. He's got fighting spirit. He is in pain but he's really up for it and that really lifts us." said team leader Chris Froome

Team principal Sir Dave Brailsford also praised his pain tolerance. "He suffered an awful, awful lot - he deserves every bit of recognition and support for his suffering."
