Former Liverpool and current Lanus striker Sebastian Leto is currently in intensive care after he was the victim of a freak accident in the club's training ground weights room.
Leto was conducting a weights session when a barbell fell on his head, leaving him with head trauma and a wound on his scalp. Initially the club's medical staff allowed him to go home to recover, but it was only after he returned complaining of headaches that he was re-evaluated and taken to a nearby hospital, where it was decided that an operation was needed.
Leto's current club Lanus today issued the following statement:
Yesterday, Sebastian Leto, during routine work in the gym, suffered an accident with head trauma, leaving a wound in his scalp. He was treated at the club, however an hour after consultation with the medical team he complained of a headache and was evaluated again.
After the evaluation it was decided he should attend hospital, where he was diagnosed with a fractured skull. He was assessed by a neurological team who confirmed the fracture.
He was then evaluated by Dr. Cristian Fuster who decided he needed surgical treatment, which will take place within the next 48 hours.
Sebastian Leto was a Rafa Bentiez signing for Liverpool in 2007, but only made 15 appearances during his time at Anfield, largely due to work permit issues. He did manage this piece of delicious skill in a reserve game against Blackburn however:
