It's just over four years since Rory McIlroy started working with trainer Steve McGregor. During that time he has won four majors and shown the potential to win many more of golf's big events.

In a video for Nike, the Irishman speaks about how his game has benefited from implementing a proper gym routine into his training.

My posture was terrible when I started. To have a better posture, to stand up straight with your shoulders back and your chest out, it even just gives off the air of confidence.

He almost sounds addicted to working out, saying that McGregor sometimes uses gym time as an incentive for him to shoot a lower score.

For me it's a necessity. It's what I need to do. I feel like getting in here gives me the best possible chance to go out on the golf course and perform to the best of my ability.

During an interview with Golf Magazine, McGregor explained how McIlroy's game had improved.

Rory's never lacked for confidence, but there's a lot of scientific evidence that links being strong and physically fit with self-confidence and psychological well-being. Those are great things to have on the course.

He had issues with his back in 2010. He was only 21 then, but he'd been swinging a club since the age of two without much focus on fitness, and that created an overuse injury. We pay special attention to keeping his back strong.

The benefits? His clubhead speed has increased, he's driving it longer. He can hit it harder without losing balance. He looks more stable in his swing, and he's getting more yardage with less effort.
