6 Of The Weird And Wonderful Sports That Have Been Invented On Top Gear

We're on the eve of the opening day of Red Bull Crashed Ice in Belfast tomorrow. This downhill ice skating race is an astonishing spectacle, and it got us thinking about some of the other inventive sports we've seen.

The boys of Top Gear are a divisive bunch but they have dreamed some dreams. They have 'invented' some remarkable sports down the years but they we're only brave enough to send a car down one of those slopes before.

Top Gear have mixed cars and sports before. Not motor sport you understand. They have brought vehicles in sports that people had never dreamed would involve vehicles.

My dream of car hurling has yet to happen though

Car Football

A car can't be classed as a quality machine unless it's stood tall in a game of car football. It was May's team vs. Hammond's team.

Hammond was in a Brazilian car while May was in a weird Japanese/Czech Republic contraption.

Car Rugby

They said it couldn't be done. Who said it couldn't be done? All sensible right thinking people said it wouldn't be possible to play a game of rugby with cars at Twickenham.

It was a brutal, physical battle. It's obligatory to say this about all rugby matches now.

The highlight was when Clarkson hit the crossbar with a 'conversion'.  Quality use of the song 'World in Union' - a tune which hasn't been used as the theme song for rugby union in a while now.

Car Tennis

Unlike the good natured sorts of the Rugby Football Union, the All-England Club were not prepared to alllow the boys screech around on their cars playing tennis.

Car tennis was a sport waiting to be invented. As John Barrett would say - 'too good'.

Car Ice Hockey

The battlelines were drawn between daytime TV and primetime telly. The two teams have to force a tire - the substitute for a puck - into the goals.

A violent hurly burly affair worthy of traditional ice hockey - as played by human beings.

 Car Cricket

By the Himalayas, a gathering of young Indians were doing what they do and playing a game of cricket. Jeremy Clarkson evidently does not like cricket. He sought to improve it. Here are the results.

The Ski Slopes

Who can ever forget the time they sent this poky little 1960s contraption down the Eddie the Eagle slopes? It is really quite spectacular.

Tomorrow our attention turns to Belfast and one of the most ridiculous looking sports in the world. People racing quickly down hill on ice, with many sharp turns and jumps; sure what can go wrong!?
