Kenny Cunningham has never been one to shy away from sticking his neck on the line when asked to give an opinion on a player.

Last night was no different at the RTE studios after Manchester United's loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

Cunningham felt United were lacking quality in two key areas: defence and midfield.

He didn't stop there as he singled out United's Player of the Season in 2017 Ander Herrera, for some stinging criticism.

Cunningham: Herrera for me, he is not up to it. He is not good enough. A good professional, a big heart.

Darragh Maloney: He was their player of the season last year?

Cunningham: I don’t care. A big heart, decent player, a good squad player. They need better in there, they need more dynamic better quality player in that central midfield area.

Cunningham baffled many with his criticism of the Spaniard but at least he is giving his honest opinion, but whether you agree with him or not is another matter.

Herrera has become somewhat of a cult hero to United fans in recent times with his passionate performances on the pitch and ever since Jose Mourinho became manager, the 27-year-old has become one of the first names on the team sheet.

Cunningham name checked a player who United should buy to replace Herrera:

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a year left on his contract at Arsenal, they should be breaking the bank to bring that type of player to the club. That would improve them in that area of the pitch

Although Chamberlain is four years younger than the Spaniard, he only started 16 games in the Premier League last year and scored just two goals and seven assists. Fewer still from the centre of midfield.

Herrera, meanwhile started 27 league games scoring only one goal and providing six assists.

United fans would be hoping if they were to replace Herrera, it would be of a higher calibre of player than Chamberlain and it is safe to say that the Arsenal player would not be much of an improvement on Ander Herrera.
