Arsenal's Title Hopes Have Taken A Blow Before The Season Has Even Begun

A fully fit Jack Wilshere would be a significant addition to any team's title chances. The England midfielder has lost some of his wonderkid gloss in recent years but there's no doubt that at the peak of his powers Wilshere could be one of the best players in the Premier League.

The problem is, he's barely been fully fit over the past four years. Arsenal have battled on without him and it looks like they're going to have to do it again this season with news emerging that he could miss as much as the first three months of the season with a hairline fracture of his left fibula.

After Wilshere missed the Community Shield final last weekend, Arsene Wenger claimed he would return to full fitness in a matter of days but the reality of the injury has now become apparent. Wilshere will be out for a minimum of six to eight weeks. However, a scan scheduled for tomorrow could reveal that the 23 year old requires surgery which would instead rule him out for the first three months of the season.

Wenger had to conjure up more magic in the form of Francis Coquelin last season to cover up his lack of midfield options and, failing a late dip into the transfer market, it looks like he may have to do something similar again.
