Arturo Vidal Is The Sourest Man In The World After Atletico Defeat

Before we get into it, we have to say that, in truth, Arturo Vidal has every right to be as sour as he is after last night. Atletico Madrid are a horrible football team. Many fans will decry that statement but it's true and it's absolutely wonderful to watch.

Atletico are the court jesters that have been kitted out in the finest armour and now sit at the top table of European football as the rest of the aristocrats sit back aghast at the pig ignorant commoner who's tearing through the banquet without a second thought.

For years, Atletico had the softest underbelly in Spanish football. All style, no substance and even less chance of breaking up the Barca-Real duopoly. Then Simeone rocks up, turns that image on its head and we've now come to a point where it's difficult to imagine Man City or Real putting it up to them in the Champions League final.

If Bayern, Barca, Real or Chelsea were to go about their business in the way that Atletico have, there'd be uproar. They would, without a doubt be the most hated team in football. But, quite frankly, it's hilarious to watch Atletico do it. We'll put it this way, when Diego Costa was doing what he does for Atletico, it was wonderful to watch. He was putting it up to the likes of Pepe and Ramos and he was winning. Diego Costa was born in the image of Simeone and neutrals loved it.

Then he moved to Chelsea and everyone accepted that he was the most odious player in football. The thought of Simeone leaving Atletico and going to one of Europe's traditional heavyweights is terrifying. But for now, he's sticking with the upstarts and everyone is loving it. Everyone except for the poor individuals who are left seething in his wake.

Take Arturo Vidal for example. Having lost out to Barcelona in the final last year, Vidal must have thought that he was quids in this time around. Barca were gone and Pep would surely configure a game plan to get around those pesky Spaniards. It didn't quite happen like that and the Chilean midfielder didn't take it particularly well.

We were superior. We controlled the game, but we did not finish off the chances we had. Atletico did exactly what they have been doing all year in their league and took advantage of their chances.

Today ugly football [Atletico] played against the best football in the world [Bayern]. The only time they saw the ball was for the goal.

They are going to be dreaming about us right up to the final. They did not have the ball, they took on the best team in the world, they took their chances and got to the final.

The best does not always win in football, like today. They are not deserved finalists.

And yet, for the second time in three seasons, they are finalists. They were moments away from winning it in 2014 and this time around, with a bit of extra Simeone steel/horrible gamesmanship this time around, you'd have to think they're never going to get a better chance to go and lift old big ears.
