Australian FA Announce Chelsea's New Manager On Twitter - Quickly Cover Their Tracks

There had been suggestions that Chelsea would have a manager installed in time to take charge of the team for this weekend's clash with Sunderland. Given that that game is a little over 24 hours away, that would seem rather unlikely at this stage but one way or another, it will come as no surprise when Chelsea do confirm the identity of their new boss.

Suggestions from in and around the club have as good as confirmed that Guus Hiddink is set to become the latest in a long line of decorated interim managers. If Chelsea were hoping to keep it a secret that they had lined up a replacement while Mourinho was still in a job then they haven't done a very good job of it.

After the initial rumours yesterday, the Australian FA decided it was up to them to announce the news late last night with the following tweet to wish their former manager good luck.

The Dutchman was in charge of the Socceroos between 2005 and 2006, a few years before his last stint as interim boss at Stamford Bridge. That spell in charge went rather well after he took over from Luis Felipe Scolari in 2009. Steady the ship was his aim and that's exactly what he did. Just one Premier League defeat and an FA Cup to show for his efforts ensured Hiddink departed with his reputation enhanced.

That reputation has since taken a bit of a blow after his rather dire second spell in charge of the Netherlands ended in June with his country effectively out of the running for Euro 2016. Now it looks like he'll be given another chance to return to a previous job with the hope being that he can do a bit better this time around.

The Australian FA eventually deleted the tweet but it's fair to say that the cat's out of the bag and Chelsea fans can look forward to Hiddink's steadying influence once again before someone more exciting is brought in to heat things up in the summer.
