Will he stay or will he go?
When it comes to the enigma that is Paul Pogba nobody really knows, though it has been confirmed today that Barcelona had a genuine interest in the Frenchman before he went to Old Trafford.
Speaking to ESPN, the Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, explained that his club were out-priced for the midfielder when he joined Manchester United for a then world-record transfer fee.
Bartomeu said:
In the summer of 2015, Paul Pogba was playing in Turin and we simply told Juve that, if one day they decide to sell the player, we would be interested.
When they sold the player, they told us what the offer would have to be and we couldn’t afford that amount of money at the time. So he went to United, and he’s making them better as a team because he’s one of the stars of the world of football right now.
That last comment, where the Barcelona chief plays up Pogba's influence as one of the stars of world football, could be telling in time. The much-maligned - and indeed much-loved star - has been at the centre of widespread speculation regards his future recently, with his agent, Mino Raiola, reported to be in contact with other clubs.
Barcelona come to the home of Manchester United on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Ole Gunnar Solskjær's side.
Whether or not the result of the tie will have any impact on where the midfielder plays his football next season remains to be seen. But should he decide he wants to head for Spain, he may have to hope his current club are willing to make a loss on his services.
