The BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards took place in Birmingham this evening, with Andy Murray becoming the first person in history to win the top award for a third time. Elsewhere, Claudio Ranieri won the Manager of the Year award, while Leicester City took the Team of the Year gong for 2016, despite having picked up four fewer Premier League points than Southampton over the past twelve months. Michael Phelps was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement award, while his compatriot Simone Biles earned the international award.

Little expense was spared in the lavish ceremony, hosted by Gabby Logan, Clare Balding and Gary Lineker.

One of the highlights was a wonderful performance remembering those we have lost in 2016. Muhammad Ali was remembered earlier in the night, before a live performance of David Bowie's Heroes provided the backdrop for the honouring of the sporting titans that have fallen in 2016. Among those remembered were Anthony Foley, Christy O'Connor Jnr, Christy O'Connor Snr and Mark Farren. You can watch it below.

Hauntingly beautiful work by the BBC.
