20 August 1994 - The Klinsmann Is Born

Tottenham 4-3 Sheff Wednesday

Tottenham supporters aren't an easy bunch to please (just ask Roman Pavlyuchenko), and they weren't convinced when Ossie Ardiles signed Jurgen Klinsmann from AS Monaco in the summer of 1994. The Spurs fans regarded Klinsmann as a poor piece of business, largely because of how the lightest touch from an opponent sent him sprawling to the ground during the World Cup a couple of months earlier.

The German slotted into a typically attacking Ardilles line-up alongside the likes of Teddy Sheringham, Darren Anderton and Nick Barmby. Incredibly, it is only 19 years since Spurs regularly lined up with five forwards in their starting XI. Klinsmann was unfazed by his critics in England and scored the fourth goal in a dramatic 4-3. His self-deprecating dive in this is what he will be fondly remembered for, and Klinsmann endeared himself to the White Hart Lane faithful with 29 goals in total, most of which were followed up with his iconic celebration.

19 August 1995 - You Can't Win Anything With Kids

Aston Villa 3-1 Man Utd

Manchester United's 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day wasn't so much remembered for what happened on the field as what what went on off it. Or in the BBC's studio to be exact. On that sunny August evening, Alan Hansen's words were immortalised forever. "You can't win anything with kids," was his infamous damning verdict on what turned out to be the most talented group of teenagers ever to emerge together during the Premier League era.

The game itself wasn't a bad affair. Ian Taylor, Mark Draper and Dwight Yorke - who would later enjoy much success with the Red Devils - handed Villa a comfortable lead before David Beckham's brilliant consolation late on.

The United XI that day featured the likes of Ryan Giggs - already established in the United side by this stage - and Paul Scholes while Beckham, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers occupied the bench. The return of Eric Cantona from an eight month suspension for his karate kick, accompanied with Beckham and co. making the step up to the first team, meant that United wrested the title back off Blackburn Rovers and completed the first of their consecutive double winning seasons.

If the previous Man Utd game was remembered for the punditry afterwards, then the opening game of 97/98 was the polar opposite. Beckham's habit of producing stunning opening day goals continued, but his strike against Villa paled in comparison to this beauty. United were home and hosed, leading 2-0 through goals from Cantona and Denis Irwin when Beckham struck in the 90th minute.

Collecting the ball inside his own half, Becks noticed Neil Sullivan was a few yards off his line and expertly guided the ball over Sullivan's head and into the net. A Channel 4 poll later voted Beckham's goal as Britain's 18th Greatest Sporting Moment.

16 August 1997 - White Feather Hat-trick

Middlesbrough 3-3 Liverpool

Bryan Robson's summer signing of Fabricio Ravanelli raised more than a few eyebrows on Teeside. Robson had just led Middlesbrough to promotion and managed to complete a massive coup in signing the former Juventus striker for £7m.

Ravanelli would become an icon for Boro in his one and only season with the club, scoring 33 goals in all competitions. It all started in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool. Stig Arne Bjornebye, John Barnes and Robbie Fowler scored for Liverpool, but the "White Feather" notched a debut hat-trick to seal a share of the spoils amid a brilliant atmosphere at the Riverside.

18 August 2001 - Bolton Arrive In Style

Leicester City 0-5 Bolton

In one of the greatest ever introductions to the Premier League, Bolton Wanderers thrashed Leicester City on the opening day of the 01/02 campaign. A younger, moustached Sam Allardyce led Bolton back to the promised land after a three year absence. That was the season the Trotters' direct and aggressive approach made them the club most promoted sides aspired emulate, as they regularly ruffled the feathers of the big boys.

At the Walkers Stadium, a brace apiece from Kevin Nolan and Per Frandsen, along with a goal from Michael Ricketts (remember him?) sealed the thrilling win. Leicester would go on to finish bottom of the Premier League that season, while Bolton ended the campaign a respectable 16th.

16 August 2003 - Ronaldo Makes His Bow

Man Utd 3-0 Bolton

The moment that changed football forever. 16 August 2003 will forever be remembered in the record books as the day a new number 7 was born at Old Trafford. Fresh from David Beckham's departure to Real Madrid and some underwhelming signings in the form of Kleberson, Eric Djemba Djemba and Tim Howard, Alex Ferguson produced a master stroke just three days before the start of the season.

In a summer where United were frustrated in their attempts to sign Ronaldinho, who chose Barcelona instead, they unearthed one of the greatest talents the world has ever seen. It was an iconic moment. From the moment Cristiano Ronaldo stepped out of the subs bench onto the Theatre of Dreams, you sensed there was something different about this kid. Even at 18, the confidence he had in his own ability and his comfort on the ball was quite remarkable.

The game itself was predictably one sided. The home side were leading through Ryan Giggs' free-kick before Ronaldo's arrival electrocuted the atmosphere. Every time he had possession, the crowd willed him to run at the Bolton defence. Run at them he did, winning a penalty that Ruud Van Nistelrooy missed, before delivering a couple of sumptuous crosses into the area. Giggs added a second soon after Ronaldo's arrival, while Paul Scholes and Van Nistelrooy completed the route.
