Roy Keane is currently 12/1 to be the next Villa manager. That is not novelty bed odds. Steve Staunton is presumably around 1000/1 but Roy is in with a shout.

Appearing on Newstalk, football journalist Colin Young said there was only one circumstance in which the appointment of Roy Keane would make sense.

If the ambition of the board is to get Villa relegated, then Roy would make a great deal of sense. He would really upset the players. I don't see that one at all.

Is Keane that bad a manager. His spell at Ipswich was beyond mediocre but his time at Sunderland saw the club get promoted and stay in the Premier League (although he did leave them in the relegation zone halfway through the following season).

His managerial record could probably be classed as average but his profile means he has been held up as some kind of hopeless Les Reed-Terry Connor bumpkin.

In his book last year, Keane defended his managerial record. His frustration at how his time as a manager is perceived slipped out a line about his early success at Sunderland.
