At Real Madrid, it is often Champions League or bust. The club have been crowned champions of Europe on 13 occasions, beginning each season with the goal of lifting that trophy at its conclusion.

In many cases, even strong domestic performances are not enough to make up for shortcomings in their European ventures. Many Los Blancos managers have been dismissed at the end of the season despite performing very well in the league if they fell short in that other competition.

Carlo Ancelotti will be concerned that a similar fate could befall him in the months ahead.

Returning to the Santiago Bernabeu in a surprise move last summer, Real Madrid have had a fairly decent campaign under his tutelage. They sit four points clear at the top of the table and look like strong favourites to claim the La Liga title, although they have been eliminated from the Copa del Rey.

However, it is their performance in the Champions League that will concern him. Despite having topped their group, they are staring down the barrel of elimination after a lacklustre 1-0 loss to PSG in midweek.

Madrid performed poorly in that game, not really offering any attacking threat. While they did come within seconds of securing an away draw, their overall showing would not have pleased their supporters. The pressure is now slowly building on their manager as a result.

Real Madrid already considering Carlo Ancelotti exit

Spanish outlet SPORT are reporting that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is already considering sacking Carlo Ancelotti this summer as he believes he is not the right person to lead the club in the long-term.

The Italian always seemed like a stop gap in the Spanish capital after Zinedine Zidane's departure last year and it would not be a surprise were he to be moved on.

The report suggests Mauricio Pochettino as Perez's first choice as potential replacement, although they would face competition from Manchester United should the Argentine leave PSG. They also mention the Spaniard's admiration for Jurgen Klopp, an altogether more unlikely option.

A good result against PSG would go a long way to easing this pressure, although Carlo Ancelotti could well be on borrowed time already.
