Brendan Rodgers Provides Damning Appraisal Of Bastian Schweinsteiger As A Potential Signing

After winning 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off with Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Celtic are almost certainly heading for the group stages.

With qualification comes money. Making that stage of the Champions League is a major part of Celtic's business model.

It means new signings can be made. Rumours have obviously been abundant with that in mind. Xavi (!!) and James McCarthy have been linked.

Also, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Ahead of Tuesday's second leg, Rodgers was asked about the possibility of signing the German. His response, quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, said plenty about where Schweinsteiger - no longer wanted by Man Utd - is physically right now.

I don’t need a marquee signing that can’t run.

A big-name signing would be good, says Rodgers. The priority though is someone who fits his side's style of play.

It doesn’t have to be a marquee signing. I think we have brought in some really top talents who have come in and excited the supporters.

I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run.

For me it’s never been about the name. But of course if the name is big and he can play, then great, but for me it’s about having the right profile of player who can come in.

No matter the age they have to be hungry in every single game and every training session and that’s what I always look for.
