It's unclear what direction Celtic will go in after the departure of Neil Lennon. John Kennedy is set to take the reins until the end of the season, but few of the club's supporters seemed enthused about the prospect of him filling the job a full-time basis.

There is a shortage of obvious candidates. The likes of Rafael Benitez and Roverto Martinez have been mentioned, but recruiting either of those managers seems like something of a long-shot.

Considering the board have lost a lot of good faith from the fans since Brendan Rodgers left the club in 2019, they will surely be looking to make a splash with whoever comes in next.

One suitable candidate could be about to become available.

Reports are indicating that Chris Wilder is set to depart from Sheffield United, leaving the club that he guided from League One to the Premier League.

It would be a big decision for the Yorkshire club to make when you consider the success he has had there, but it could be a fantastic opportunity for Celtic.

Wilder has made his name on improving the squad he has at his disposal. Many of the players the used in League One were still an integral part of the team last season when they finished in 9th place in the Premier League.

He certainly has the tendency to bring footballers on in leaps and bounds, something Ireland supporters can attest to. The likes of John Egan and Enda Stevens have greatly improved under his tutelage, going from lower league players to one of genuine top flight quality.

He seems like exactly the type of personality that Celtic are crying out for.

The 53-year old is innovative in his tactics, employing an attractive style when the opportunity allows. He also has a very strong personality and wouldn't be overwhelmed by a job as big as Celtic.

Speaking on Talksport this afternoon, Tony Cascarino said he felt Wilder would be the perfect man to get the Scottish club back on track.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Premier League club came in for [Wilder].

Celtic is a typical club that Chris Wilder could regenerate. That battling and that atmosphere, he builds football clubs. That's what he has done over the years.

With a lack of other obvious candidates, Celtic could certainly do a lot worse.

They certainly need to get this appointment right if they are to stop Rangers becoming the dominant force in Scottish football. Chris Wilder might be the man to do just that.
