The club that was once universally known as Rangers Football Club were promoted to the Scottish Premier League tonight after a four-year exile.

They sealed promotion with a 1-0 win over Dunbarton at Ibrox.

For Scottish football journalists, it is a time to rejoice. They have an Old Firm game to look forward to once more - one with an added twist next season.

Unsurprisingly, the news kickstarted a fraught debate on social media.

Those who are partial to the name Sevco object to the narrative that Rangers have returned to the big-time, instead choosing to congratulate this new-fangled upstart entity on reaching the top flight for the first time.

Twitter user Nicky Martin has posed an interesting question.

'If your dog dies and you get a new one that looks like the old one and call it the same name, does it mean it's the same dog?'

It is a philosophical question which many Celtic fans are asking themselves tonight.

On 31 July 2012, Charles Green announced that Sevco Scotland Limited, the owners of Rangers, were changing their name to Rangers Football Club Limited.

But the question as to whether this Rangers are the same club as the old Rangers is still up for argument.
