Celtic fans displayed a Palestine flag tifo ahead of their Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, and Palestinian flags were waved across Parkhead in a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza amid the ongoing conflict with Israel.

In a statement, the club had told supporters not to display Palestine flags at the game.

"Celtic Park is where we come to support our football club," said the club, after large groups of supporters held Palestine flags in the away end at Hearts at the weekend.

"Recognising this, respecting the gravity of the tragedy unfolding and its impact on communities in Scotland and across the world, and in line with other clubs, leagues and associations, we ask that banners, flags and symbols relating to the conflict and those countries involved in it are not displayed at Celtic Park at this time."

But just as they did at Tynecastle at the weekend, Celtic fans waved Palestinian flags tonight.

A statement from the Green Brigade ahead of the game said that the group "will distribute thousands of flags outside the stadium. While it would be easier to distribute flags inside, we are prohibited from bringing the flags into the stadium."

Despite the club's ruling, several Palestine flags could be seen as the two sides came out at Celtic Park, alongside the tifo made by the Green Brigade, as well as during the rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Along' that preceded kickoff.

Celtic will almost certainly be fined by UEFA over the gesture.

They were fined €15,000 last season by UEFA after fans hung an anti-monarchy banner at a Champions League game.

With the atmosphere characteristically electric on a big Champions League night at Celtic Park, it took the Hoops four minutes to take an unlikely lead through Kyogo Furuhashi.

Ireland defender Liam Scales was in the starting XI for Brendan Rodgers' side, with Mikey Johnston on the bench. It finished 2-2 for Brendan Rodgers's side who earned their first point in the Champions League group stage.
