Cristiano Ronaldo has had an airport named after himself on his native Madeira, the latest in a long line of honours the island has bestowed upon their most famous son.

The Madeira International airport will soon be renamed in honour of Ronaldo, following a vote by the local government.

Magnificently, Ronaldo thanked the island for the honour from his own private jet:

It is the latest in a long line of Madiera slapping Ronaldo's name on things around the island:they have previously named a museum and hotel after him, and have also built a statue of him. The statue featured Ronaldo in trademark standing-over-free-kick-before-skying-it-over-the-crossbar mode, but the most notable feature was the quite visible bronzed erection.

Here is an image of the statue in question, tweeted by a Dan Weiner, as the world occasionally tires of subtlety:

Exactly why Ronaldo's manhood is so prominent has always been assumed to the island paying their hero a compliment, but it may, in fact, be a subversive dig at their hero, inspired by Greek sculptors.

If you studied history as a curious teenager, you will have come across the dominant sculpture of David, by Michaelangelo. David stands tall and exudes power and influence, with one slight incongruity: his manhood is rather small. This is not Michaelangelo being prissy/lazy, this was done on purpose, as a classics professor at NYU explained to Quartz:

There is the contrast between the small, non-erect penises of ideal men (heroes, gods, nude athletes etc) and the over-size, erect penises of Satyrs (mythic half-goat-men, who are drunkards and wildly lustful) and various non-ideal men. Decrepit, elderly men, for instance, often have large penises.

We may be reading too much into this.

Anyway, Ronaldo follows int he footsteps of George Best in having an airport named after him. What's next?

We feel the next logical step is the renaming of the Madeira cake in his honour.

Then, at last, he can eat himself.
