Irreconcilable differences apparently now include whether you prefer Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo... at least for one football mad couple anyway.

A report from Russian newspaper Argumento I Fakti has claimed that a Russian couple are set to go their separate ways after an argument broke out about the Ronaldo and Messi when the pair were watching Argentina's win against Nigeria in the final match of the group stages.

The couple, named as Arsen and Lyudmila had fallen in love at a bar whilst watching the 2002 World Cup, but according to Arsen, his wife's broadside against Messi was the straw that broke the camel's back:

Since the beginning of the World Cup, she mocked Messi and said he couldn't even score a penalty against Iceland.

I could not contain myself and told her what I thought about the vain Ronaldo, the Portuguese national team and all the clubs she likes.

Then I took my belongings and left her forever.

The report states that Arsen filed for divorce at the courts of the city of Chelyabinsk in the Urals the next morning.

In other news looks like Arsen may be switching his allegiances from Juventus to Real Madrid with the Serie A side reportedly tabling a £88 million move for Cristiano Ronaldo according to Reuters. Madrid have also been linked with a €272 million move for PSG's Kylian Mbappe, but that rumour has been scotched by the club themselves, who have released a statement denying any interest in the France international:

Real Madrid has not made any offers to PSG or the player and regrets the dissemination of this type of information.

Given the information published in the last hours referring to an alleged agreement between Real Madrid CF and PSG for player Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid says they are flatly false.
