Ronaldo was the favourite for the award, his third Ballon D'Or in total, coming off of a spectacular year where he scored 54 goals in all competitions. He won the award ahead of Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer.

Some had expressed a desire for Messi to win it again, after a strong performance at the World Cup for Argentina, however many people in football also claimed that Neuer deserved to win it, after a fantastic season with Bayern Munich and of course, collecting a World Cup winner's medal with Germany, however, Ronaldo saw off the competition from both players.
