Another day, another Mohamed Salah winner.

This time it was Aston Villa that were on the wrong end of the Egyptian's scoring antics, with his second half penalty the difference between the sides at Anfield.

While this display was not as awe inspiring as some of his recent performances, Salah was once again outstanding this afternoon. His tally for the season now stands at 21 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. He has only made 22 appearances.

Of course, there has been plenty of conversation around Salah's contract situation in recent months.

The 29-year old has only 18 months remaining on his current deal, and while he has said he wants to stay at Liverpool, the club seem hesitant to meet what are surely some very hefty salary demands.

The general consensus is that Liverpool need to stump up the cash and keep a player who is arguably the best footballer in the world at the moment, regardless of their wage structure. However, some feel the club could be best served by moving on from the forward.

Speaking on Premier Sports after the win over Villa, former Ireland defender Damien Delaney said that Liverpool must be very careful in committing to such a hefty contract and could be better off selling Salah and replacing him with a younger player.

I don't think either of them owe anything to anyone, they've both got to do what's best for them.

If Liverpool feel moving forward that they have to sell him, recoup a fee for him, and then replace him because they've had the best years out of him.

The last thing you want is a 33-year old who isn't contributing to the same level as he is now and is on £400,000 or £500,000 per week. That causes untold amounts of problem for Liverpool moving forward.

A side of me thinks that they've got the best out of him, that they can replace him with a younger player and potentially build again.

It will be a five year deal on around £20million per year, that's type of money. That's huge...

I think a lot of players think it is a status thing - 'I'm the best player in the world, so I should be paid like the best player in the world'...

I'd love to see him stay, play the next two or three years and then head off to the Middle East or Far East and top off his pension that way. But it is going to be a tough one for Liverpool.

I think the way Liverpool are handling their business is great. They have kept everything below the surface. You look at other clubs and everything is on display, it causes carnage and is always in the headlines.

Liverpool handle their business correctly. If Mo Salah moves on, there will be no fanfare and the club will deal with it in the correct way. Equally, if they give him the new contract it will be the same thing.

We're sure not many Liverpool fans will agree with that assessment.

While it is true that Salah will turn 30 next year, he is phenomenal physical condition and rarely suffered with injuries over the course of his career. He only seems to be getting better with age and could follow the example of the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo by performing at a world class level in his 30s.

It is also worth mentioning that replacing Salah could be an ever more expensive venture than handing him a new contract, while there is also no guarantee that any new signing could perform at anywhere near the same level.

Either way, you suspect Liverpool will look to tie him down with a new deal as soon as possible.
