"I Was Watching Netflix" - Damien Duff Not Getting Carried Away As Shels Beat Rovers

Damien Duff has overseen a remarkable season as Shelbourne boss thus far but is not getting carried away despite their latest stunning win.

The former Ireland international - widely regarded to be one of the country's finest talents - has made a strong transition to life in the dugout.

Duff guided what was a newly-promoted Shels side to the FAI Cup final in his first season, before causing more disruption in securing European football for the North Dubliners the following year.

Now Shels are on a title charge and made a real statement via a 2-0 victory away to champions Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght on Friday evening, with Will Jarvis scoring both goals.

Rovers did go down to 10-men and had injury issues, but Shels took control of the game on merit and have extended their lead at the league summit to six points over Derry City.

They are now nine points clear of Rovers and - having won dramatically late away to St Pat's Athletic earlier this week - have momentum on their side.

Damien Duff makes Netflix claim as he is not getting carried way

Duff was in typically pragmatic form as he reflected on the win in an interview with LOITV but he is refusing to take the hype away from title rivals Rovers and Derry.

Shelbourne went into their match with a four-point advantage but Duff claimed he wasn't aware of the permutations, preferring to watch Netflix instead.

Even if we had a 100-point gap on Derry and Rovers they would still be hot favourites," he told LOITV.

"You surprised me before the game - I think it is proof I am not getting carried away.

"I could have looked at the league table earlier but I was actually watching Netflix."

Duff did pay homage to the traveling Shels supporters after the game, although he doubled-down on trying to temper expectations around his side.

'I think the last time we won away to Shamrock Rovers was in 2005 so they (the fans) have been waiting a long time," he added.

"They have been waiting a long time for a successful Shelbourne team. Are we successful? No. You become successful by winning trophies.

"It is fabulous for everyone involved with Shelbourne that we are top of the league of the minute but there is half a season to go.

"I am not getting carried away. Everybody outside can, but myself and the players are very calm, very respectful of the opposition and bloody humble as well."

Derry dropped points after fighting back to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Sligo Rovers at the Ryan McBride Brandywell.

Elsehwere, there was more disappointment for Stephen Kenny as St Pats surrendered the lead in the 90th minute against Bohemians, drawing 2-2.
