Sunderland's Darron Gibson is believed to have been involved in a car crash this morning, causing serious damage to a line of parked cars in a housing estate near the club's training ground.

The 30-year-old former Manchester Untied midfielder was pictured speaking with a police officer at the scene, in photos that were uploaded to social media.

Gibson, who is currently out of action through injury for the Championship's bottom club, was widely photographed on the scene of the incident.

Reported shortly thereafter a Northumbria Police spokesman told the Sunderland Echo:

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving over the legal alcohol limit and he is currently in police custody.

Inquiries are ongoing and the arrest follows the report of a car colliding with a number of parked vehicles in Dovedale Road, Sunderland.

A spokesperson for Sunderland revealed that they were "aware of a traffic accident," but were not commenting any further.

The extent of the damage caused by the incident has been widely captured on Twitter.

Thankfully, there does not appear to have been anyone hurt during the incident.

Gibson does have an unfortunate past with driving infractions; in 2015 he received a 20-month driving ban for a drink-driving sentence.
