Denmark's kit supplier Hummels has sent out a message before the controversial Qatar World Cup this November.

The clothing brand have released a statement today explaining their kit designs for the Danish team at the tournament. All three of Denmark's World Cup jerseys will have the brand logo and its designs the same colours of the jerseys.

It makes it very difficult to pick out what brand the making the kit is, but that's exactly the point.

Hummels explained that this is because they don't want to be visible during a tournament that has cost lives.

We don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives.

We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn't the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation.

Black for mourning

Furthermore, they also explained the reasoning for the third black kit. Hummels said that the kit is black to symbolise mourning and that it is there to make a statement about the host country's horrendous human right record.

The Most Controversial World Cup

Hummel's statement comes just under two months away from the World Cup starting on the 20th of November. This year's football tournament is controversial for a number of reasons.

As mentioned before, the host country has a terrible human rights record. Thousands of migrant workers died during the construction of the stadiums in the intense summer heat. An article by The Guardian estimates that 6,500 workers died since Qatar won the rights for the World Cup.

Furthermore, the gulf state does not respect LGBTQ rights with homosexuality being illegal with a punishment of a minimum of three years in prison.

There has also been plenty of speculation around the awarding of the tournament to Qatar in the first place, with many fairly believing that FIFA's selection process may have been corrupt.

This is some of the many reasons why this world cup tournament is tainted with controversy. Qatar has been accused of sportwashing ever since it won the rights to host the World Cup but if more companies such as Hummels speak out, it will achieve the opposite.
