Dundalk Fan Who Stormed FAI Headquarters Gets Possibly Ill-Advised Tattoo

The redoubtable Maxi McAllister, the Dundalk fan who stormed the FAI headquarters in 2006 and doused both himself and a Christmas Tree in petrol, may have jumped the gun a bit in celebrating his side's impressive performance this season.

McAllister, who is known by both his family and the courts as Mark Kavanagh, has proudly unveiled a neat little tattoo this week. Suffice to say, the tattoo appears to suggest that Dundalk are already the League of Ireland champions for 2014. And by 'appears to suggest', we mean officially states.

Maxi was jailed for four months for his little escapade eight years ago. Incidentally, he was protesting the decision to exclude Dundalk from the 2007 Premier League, despite the fact that they had won the promotion/relegation playoff with Waterford United that November.

Armed with petrol and a cigarette lighter he demanded to speak to John Delaney and then Dundalk manager, John Gill. The latter agreed to speak with him and this conversation appeared to have a soothing effect on Maxi who agreed to give up the protest and later expressed regret over the incident. Dundalk still didn't go up and Galway United, who finished one place behind Dundalk in the First Division, were actually promoted in their stead. The Oriel Park club apparently failed to fulfil the administrative criteria laid down by the League's advisory panel at the start of the year.

Given Dundalk's faltering form in the past two weeks, his new tattoo could prove the latest in what is probably a long line of unfortunate premature tattoos. I suspect the city of Newcastle still houses many folk whose arms bear the message 'Newcastle United, Premier League Champions 1995-96'.

The Dundalk Democrat, meanwhile, are truly horrified by the notion that anyone other than Dundalk might win the League this season.
