Emiliano Sala is reported to have been on board a plane which went missing over the English Channel on Monday night.

Sala, a 28-year-old Argentinian, had on Monday penned a three-and-a-half year deal with Cardiff City. The Premier League side had paid a club record fee to Ligue 1 side Nantes.

According to BBC, a Piper Malibu plane with two people on board went missing off the island of Alderney.

The plane, which had been flying from Nantes to Cardiff, disappeared from radar at around 8pm.

AFP reported on Tuesday morning that French police sources say Sala was on board the plane.

A rescue helicopter and RNLI crews from Alderney and Guernsey were dispatched to search for the plane on Monday night.

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has said the club is concerned for Sala's safety.

"We are very concerned by the latest news that a light aircraft lost contact over the Channel last night," said Dalman.

"We are awaiting confirmation before we can say anything further. We are very concerned for the safety of Emiliano Sala."

Sala was due to train with his new teammates for the first time today.
