Tomorrow sees Irish football's biggest game in 14 years as we take on France in Lyon.

Irish fans have invaded the city in anticipation of the game. Also in Lyon are a number of English fans.

England's last game in the group stages was on Monday night nearby Saint-Etienne and they are still in the area before their last-16 game with Iceland four hours south in Nice on Monday night.

According to Independent.ie, there have been some tensions between Irish and a group of English fans in the city.

The group attempted to provoke Irish fans by singing anti-IRA songs. This resulted in police intervention.

One eye witness is quoted as saying:

Most have been absolutely sound but one group approached Ireland fans outside a pizza place and started to sing anti-IRA songs. It was quite clear they were looking for trouble and was starting to get nasty.

There was a large crowd of Ireland fans present and they must be commended for not reacting. The French police were nearby and they waded in with pepper spray when they saw the incident escalating.

In terms of incidents between Irish and English fans, this would appear to be an outlier to normal behaviour.

We have also seen plenty of videos with good-natured chanting going back and forth between groups.
