At long last, Evan Ferguson is set to join West Ham on a loan deal that will take him away from Brighton for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, before a larger discussion about his future takes place.

Ferguson's future had been the subject of much speculation over the past few weeks and months, with recent reports revealing Brighton were open to the prospect of selling him on a permanent deal in this transfer window.

While a recent ankle injury threatened to scupper Ferguson's wish to leave Brighton this month, a successful medical on Sunday evening will see the Bettystown native reunited with his former Brighton manager Graham Potter in London.

According to the reports, the six-month deal will see the Hammers not only cover Ferguson's wage bill for the remainder of the season but also pay Brighton a loan fee as well as a number of other add-ons.

Despite being sidelined for much of January, Ferguson made his return to professional action on Saturday, coming off the bench as Fabian Hurzeler's men received a 7-0 thumping at the hands of Nottingham Forest - a return that cleared the way for Sunday's move and potentially for Ferguson to don the Hammers kit as early as Monday night in their clash against Chelsea.

West Ham move clears path for Ferguson rejuvenation

While moves to Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal were all floated recently, the West Ham move appears a prudent opportunity for Ferguson who looks destined to at least have the opportunity to return to the form that catapulted his name across English football in 2023.

Primarily, the long-term absence of Michael Antonio, and West Ham's lack of another suitable centre forward performing week in, week out should clear the path for Ferguson to exponentially increase his game time, and hopefully from there rediscover his previously electric form. So far this season, Ferguson has started just four games for Fabian Hurzeler and came off the bench eleven times.

Similarly, new West Ham manager Graham Potter has a track record in getting the best out of Ferguson, having previously afforded the 20-year-old his jaw-dropping breakthrough at Brighton. An injury-stricken Ferguson, who is lacking in game-time and very possibly confidence will only benefit from having a trusted face once again championing him.

Should he impress during his London stint and eventually put a tumultuous year firmly in the rear-view mirror, Ferguson may not only restore his own confidence and incredible ability but could also tee up a high valuation for a more permanent move in the Summer if he so desires.
