It's Premier League opening night and it's been a fine start to a new era of the Friday night opener between Arsenal and Leicester.

It is a new era though as traditionally the English top flight season has kicked off with a flurry of Saturday fixtures. While it might always have produced the excitement and sense of occasion of tonight's game, there's generally been something special about that first round of fixtures.

We rolled back the years to try and decide what matches were the most memorable or entertaining opening day fixtures over the last 25 years.

5: Arsenal 2 Norwich 4, 1992/93

The inaugural weekend of the Premier League saw Brian Deane score the first ever goal in the division for Sheffield United as they beat the eventual title winners Manchester United 1-0.

Sky Sports and the BBC paid a record £305m for the TV rights to the breakaway league and many thought that this deal would fail and Sky needed a match that was going to live up to they hype and fans were not disappointed as Norwich came from 2-0 down at half time, in Highbury to beat Arsenal 4-2.

4: Wigan 0 Blackpool 4, 2010/11

A memorable opening day for the seaside club Blackpool when they defeated Wigan Athletic at the DW stadium.

Blackpool were surprisingly promoted from the Championship the season before with manager Ian Holloway (A young Seamus Coleman was part of the promotion push) and before a ball had even been kicked in the league, everybody was writing them off.

The Tangerines were 3-0 up at half-time to everyone's disbelief, except for Holloway and his team of course. They were top of the table on day one for the first time since 1957/58 but that was short lived, as Chelsea trounced West Brom 6-0 to take them to summit of the Premier League.

3: Arsenal 3 Liverpool 4, 2016/17

We only have to go back to the opening weekend of last season for a pulsating game between two of the Premier League heavyweights.

A lot was expected of Liverpool in 2016/17 as Jurgen Klopp had his first pre-season as manager and you could tell, as they came from a goal down to race into a 4-1 lead after 63minutes.

A beautifully curled free kick from Coutinho before half time got them back in it, before new signing Sadio Mane scored a wonderful solo goal to make it 4-1 at the Emirates.

Arsenal got two goals back with 15 minutes to go but Klopp and his team hung on for a famous victory in London.

2: Sheffield Wednesday 3 Tottenham Hotspur 4, 1994/95

An absolute classic of a game on the opening day of the 94/95 season at Hillsbrough when Tottenham beat Wednesday 4-3.

This particular Spurs side were perennial underachievers when you go through their squad with the likes of Teddy Sherringham, Darren Anderton and Sol Campbell in their team and the famous German striker Jurgen Klinsmann made his debut for the North London Club.

Spurs raced into a two goal lead after 30 minutes when Sherringham and Anderton scored two well worked goals but Wednesday pegged them back in the second half with a goal from Dan Petrescu before Colin Calderwood of Spurs scored an own goal to level things up on 66 minutes.

However that lead was short lived, as Nick Barmby put Spurs 3-2 up before Klinsmann scored a trademark header on his debut to seal the opening day victory for Tottenham.

1: Aston Villa 3 Man United 1, 1995/96

On August 19 1995, Man United arrived to Villa Park with a new, young squad after Sir Alex Ferguson decided it was time to get rid of three stalwarts from his side in Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Andrei Kanchelskis.

Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Andy Cole were all injured while Eric Cantona was still suspended, so Gary and Phil Neville, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt were all handed their debuts.

It turned out to be a disaster as the young United side were 3-0 down at half time after Dwight Yorke terrorised the defence.

However, the memorable moment from this opening weekend was Alan Hansen declaring on BBC's Match of the Day that night, "You'll never win anything with kids," and the rest is history.
