Liverpool and Man City played out one of the best games of the 2022/23 Premier League season so far, and, as noted by Gary Neville, a major reason for that was the style of refereeing employed by Anthony Taylor.

Taylor did not blow the whistle for small amounts of contact throughout the game and allowed players to get physical, which greatly added to the atmosphere and intensity of the game.

I'm not knocking him because I thought to be fair today, we saw a referee that was really sure and had to be sure to referee the game in that way. And we've been calling out for years in this studio.

Like five or six years ago there was a time when pundits, including ourselves, would say 'we never see challenges anymore, the contact's gone in the game.'

We've now seen that coming back and I don't think we should to be fair be too critical of Anthony Taylor's approach. I thought it was fantastic and added to this game.

After the match, match-winner Mo Salah spoke to reporters and gave his thoughts on whether Liverpool are back in the title race after their massive win.

"We don't have to think about the title at the moment, of course personally I love to play always for a title.

"In my head I am going to fight for it, but we need to focus more and take one game at a time.

"We don't have to feel more pressure that there is still a gap between us and first and second but of course we are going to play for a title.

"As players and a team, we should be in a better position, the players are excited to win and that gives us a good push for the next games."
