Manchester United may have conceded early to Club Brugge tonight, but they have not let anything past them in their opening two Premier League games.

Indeed, since November 2014, they have the best defensive record in the Premier League, better even than Chelsea, who have been unusually generous in the first two weeks of the season.

In Monday Night Football lesson, Gary Neville plucked out the November date, because it marked the return of Michael Carrick to the Manchester United side. Carrick, the midfielder whose performance against Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final reminded The Racing Post's Bruce Millington of 'a man being attacked by a swarm of bees', is the man around whom Manchester united's form has been rebuilt.
