The multitudes of bandwagoners and sunshine supporters who follow Gelfe IF in the Swedish top flight - known as the Allsvenskan - couldn't be arsed making the 700 mile trip to Kalmar FC for their game last night.

Now, we've seen many fine examples of maniacal devotion in our time.

Balls has an uncle who once travelled with two other Galway United fans to watch his team lose 5-0 in the Brandywell on an ice-cold day during the Christmas holidays. And we know there are hardcore types who wouldn't consider this aberrant behaviour at all. Who would see it as nothing special.

At least he had a couple of Galway city comrades with he could share a dark joke in the Brandywell that day.

Gelfe IF's most devoted fan didn't even enjoy that comfort. For the away end contained a grand total of one supporter.

Most newspaper outlets have confidently reported that the supporter travelled a full 700 miles to the game, dismissing the possibility that he supports Gelfe from a remote distance.

Gelfe IF has seen better days. They currently sit second from bottom in the Swedish League, a position which may have contributed to their situation as regards travelling support. Captain Boycott had more men farming for him in the summer of 1880 than Gelfe had supporting them last night.

But they enjoyed a famous win last night, after which they celebrated with their lonely fan.

He probably won't get a ticket for the final either.
