Harry Kane's Ambitions Can't But Remind One Of Ronan O'Gara

We all remember the audacious bid the Miami Dolphins made for Ronan O'Gara back in the mid noughties. Or rather the audacious attempt of Ronan O'Gara to spook the IRFU by concocting the rumour that the Miami Dolphins were intent on taking him.

Whatever way you choose to remember it.

Harry Kane hit 21 Premier League goals last year and is only 22. Bright futures and all that. However, he spies a time in the future when he would like to give the role of kicker in the NFL a shot.

It depends on how my football career goes but, when I am finished, I would love to go the NFL and be a kicker.

Even if I got to play just one game it is something I would like to do.

It's a long way off yet. But it is definitely something I have thought about. We've had NFL teams come to Spurs and I can kick the ball as high and as far as them, but not on a consistent basis so I would need a bit of practice first.

Obviously, the whole thing is less dastardly than O'Gara's idea. Kane was appearing at a promotional event for the new Madden game and may well have been placating the people paying him.

Still, he wont be the first soccer player to transfer to the NFL. Clondalkin born Neil O'Donoghue played for Shamrock Rovers during the 1971-72 season before heading to the US in the summer to play some college soccerball in Alabama.

The college's soccer programme went the way of many US soccer programmes at that time and was disbanded. Rather than traipse home, O'Donoghue simply transferred to Auburn and American Football and became their starting place kicker.

He earned All-America honours and was drafted in the fifth round by the Buffalo Bills. Between 1977 and 1985 he played for the Bills, the Tampa Bay Buccanneers and the St. Louis Cardinals.
