The Telegraph have compiled a list of the highest earning players in some of Europe's biggest leagues, and they have revealed that a new player is at the top of the Premier League's earners list.

Since Robin Van Persie has departed for Fenerbache, another Manchester United player is now the highest paid player in England as Wayne Rooney tops the list with an eye-watering £16.5m per year.

Rooney is United's captain and was their top goalscorer last season with 12 league goals in 33 Premier League games, and he is also the fifth most followed professional footballer on twitter.

Van Persie was previously on more money than Rooney, which means that Manchester United have freed up a significant chunk of their wage bill after the Dutch striker make the move to the Turkish Super Lig. Van Persie will be on similar money as he plays for Fenerbache, as the tax laws in Turkey as less strict on pro footballers, making the league a much more attractive option to Europe's biggest stars.
