If You Have Spain In Your Office Sweepstake, It's Time To Start Feeling Nervous

Spain will land in France this week seeking to defend their European title for a second time, although if tonight's game against Georgia is anything to go by, the trophy will be taking up residence outside of Spain for the first time in eight years.

Vincente Del Bosque picked a strong squad for the farewell friendly in Getafe, but they somehow came a cropper: crashing to a 1-0 defeat to lowly Georgia, who are one of the few nations in Europe who have failed to qualify for Euro 2016. This was partly down to the ephemeral genius of Aiden McGeady; a fleet of foot that has proved sadly fleeting.

This was not a second-string side shambling around either, Del Bosque picked a very strong side:

The selection of De Gea is notable, it suggests he is finally first-choice ahead of Saint Iker Casillas, who has retained the faith of Del Bosque despite a succession of poor performances (he caused more errors leading directly to goals in this season's Champions League than any other player).

Despite the strength of Spain's line-up, it went horribly wrong. Georgia scored four minutes before half-time, as Jordi Ala endured a quiet nightmare:

Spain - as is their existential need - dominated possession, hogging the ball for 75% of the game. But against obdurate opponents, they failed to convert all that ball into a goal.

This failure against Georgia may manifest itself during the tournament. With only eight teams eliminated in the group stages, progress is probable off the back of three draws, meaning teams are likely to sit deep and attempt to cling on to a point for an hour and a half. This could take root against Turkey and the Czech Republic in particular.

In all, it was a humiliating night for Spain, as Dermot Corrigan elucidated in the aftermath:

Andreas Iniesta came off the bench in the second half with  his customary sparkle, and Spain will likely turn to Alvaro Morata for goals, following a poor showing by Aduriz.
