Quite a few Irish players have made the move to Italy in recent seasons, with some of them already experiencing quite a bit of success.

Festy Ebosele has established himself as a key part of the Udinese team this season, while Kevin Zefi has already been called up to train with the Inter first team. Cathal Herffernan's time with AC Milan was fairly brief, but he only left the club after deciding to take an offer from Newcastle.

One of the names that has been somewhat lost in the carousel of Ireland men in Italy is Liam Kerrigan.

He made the move to Serie B side Como in the summer of 2022, initially impressing and getting off the mark for the club in a game at Pisa. However, he would suffer an ACL injury in September of that year that kept him on the sidelines almost 12 months.

The Sligo native has been slowly integrated back into the team this season, making six appearances off the bench so far in the campaign.

However, some mixed results on the pitch meant that Como have undergone a switch in managers in recent days.

Former Ireland U21 star set to be managed by Cesc Fabregas

It was announced yesterday that Cesc Fabregas has been appointed as the new interim manager of Como.

The Spaniard hung up his boots at the end of last season after one campaign as a player with the Italian club, where he is also a minority owner.

He has been coaching their youth team in recent months, although he has now been promoted to the top job after the recent departure of Moreno Longo. It remains to be seen how long he will stay in the position, although a good run of results could see him kept on for the rest of the season.

Como currently sit in sixth place in Serie B, six points off the automatic promotion places with a game in hand. With teams finishing between third and eighth all making the play-offs, they are sure to be in the promotion mix over the months ahead.

Hopefully Cesc Fabregas will give Liam Kerrigan the opportunity to play some extended minutes and make a full recovery from what was a very serious injury.
